Motherhood and Inequality

Eduardo Porter at The New York Times makes a case this morning that of. Motherhood Still a Cause of Pay Inequality.

This follows another recent Times story about men being attracted to pink collar jobs  by his colleagues Shaila Dewan and Robert Gebeloff.

Mr. Porter adddresses the usual concerns–that women stop out of the workforce more frequently than men and that women are attracted to jobs that generally pay less–education rather than engineering, for example.

Largely absent from his analysis is an examination of what inroads women have made in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and other high paying fields. It would appear that for now women remain attracted to jobs and careers that continue to offer flexibility and lifestyle choices and their compensation reflects that.
