What kind of week is it for Women Executives?

September 7th, 2011 by admin in compensation, employment, management

What kind of week has it been so far for women executives?  It has been decidedly mixed.

On Tuesday, Jill Abramson  ascended to become the executive editor of The New York Times and promoted Susan Chira, the former foreign editor, who Ms. Abramson described as being the “soul” of The New York Times.

Over a dozen years ago Ms. Chira wrote a book entitled A Mother’s Place: Taking the Debate about Working Mothers Beyond Guilt and Blame.  The book had an intriguing thesis but was not widely read.

The day was not as bright for Carol Bartz formerly of Yahoo and Sallie Krawcheck formerly of Bank of America. The news about Ms. Bartz broke on All Things D and included the email she sent in her usual forthright style announcing her departure saying she had been fired by phone. CNNTech then carried news of a a well documented severance package.. The price of Yahoo stock was up 7% today.
Several analysts are anticipating Bank of America will shed jobs and close branches over the next few years. Tim Morse is serving as interim CEO of Yahoo and some are asking if parts of the business will be sold.
