Can Your Child Enhance Your Career?

July 20th, 2011 by admin in Books, Careers, Uncategorized

Long time readers of this blog will remember a post in January 2010 when I interviewed Marc Freedman, the head of Civic Ventures  about working longer. You can read that post here. This year Mr. Freedman came out with a new book entitled The Big Shift. A compelling and well reviewed book, it advances the conversation about delaying retirement. One suggestion he floats is that of a gap year for adults.

Perhaps because his children are young, (in one anecdote in the book he relates asking for an AARP discount and cribs in the same hotel reservation) he overlooks an obvious resource as baby boomers make transitions–their young adult children. In today’s New York Times  James C. McKinley Jr.  has A Word with Mitch Winehouse

Mr. Winehouse, a former salesman and trainer who is now a cab driver is, at 60, getting a chance to be a professional jazz singer. Mr. McKinley reminds us that his daughter, Amy Winehouse, a British soul singer and songwriter, who has had brushes with addiction. She is also 27 years old and in a good position to help her father realize a deferred career choice.

At the height of the dot.com bubble I wrote a story for The New York Times about parents who worked for their adults children. It appears that the trend may be poised for a revival.

Note: The death in London of Amy Winehouse was confirmed on Saturday, July 23.
